Correctly named, nonsense words can feel like complete nonsense to learn, but really they are so important for reading development. Nonsense words show students underlying ability to decode when meaning and context is removed. As children get older, text gets harder and requires more decoding of multi-syllabic words. Being able to read nonsense words makes decoding much easier. Click here or on the image for multiple NWF word lists to practice at home. There is a new list for each month. Try them in the car on the way to school, at the breakfast table or before bed. See how many you can get in a minute, or just practice at your leisure.
